Great deal for the AVS.
not sure why the AVS seem to low ball their RFAs yet spend more on unknown UFAs

So far, nobody they've signed as an RFA has proven themselves. I assume they didn't lowball them, but are trying to stick to a team philosophy of "Show us what you're worth" etc. Only reason Jones got paid like he did is because he could walk.

Because the system favors UFAs......that how it works. No one signs RFAs to offer sheets therefore players have no bargaining power.

I would be ok if Subban signed a deal like that one. If he wants more money, he needs to bounce back.

If he was getting low balled he wouldn't have signed for 3 years past UFA eligibility.

I'm just saying Duchene, Downe, and now EJ sign for what i would say are lower contracts. I understand they were rfas but when you are at the bottom of the cap you might take care of the ones you know first.

I think though in all honesty Duchene and EJ got right about what they deserved. Both had so so years last year (actually Duchene under achieved big time and yes I know he was injured). I think signing Duchene to a 2 year deal like that is super smart. You want big money....step up.

Why would you overpay? Obviously EJ wouldn't have signed for 4 years if he thought he was being lowballed.

Makes me think with the EJ and Duchene signing that management is telling them that if they take a little less they'll actually spend the money to surround them with talent.

I think management is going to be bringing in another quality winger before the season starts.

I guess this could be true I don't believe many players (especially young ones) leave money on the table so their team can sign other players. Only really hear of this after the player made a boatload of quid. Also their agents would never agree to this. Could be wrong though...who knows.

Also hope you are right about AVS signing another winger. Love for them to sign Semin......however got a feeling the Wings will shell out some major loot for him.

They are not front loaded contracts to lower a cap hit or anything.

Look at the salaries 3.25, 3.75, 4.25, 4.25 for Johnson and 3.25 and 3.75 for Duchene. Its all based on progression, chances are Duchene would have the exact same contract as EJ if he went higher year in terms.

They pay on progress and potential the farther they go into the contract, dont pay up front and tack on extra years to lower the cap.

Way prefer these contracts, gives them something to strive for and not just strike it rich and relax as soon as the ink dries

Exactly......honestly this is the way contracts should be structured.

So are we putting a package together for Bobby Ryan or what?

We have alot D and G prospects that we can move. Maybe throw in McGinn or Jones.

It's a good deal and a fair price for both sides.. The Avs are paying based on what they're getting rather than hype. EJ is a top 50 d-man in the league that has the potential to get better and hit a big pay day in 4 years

I don't think the Ducks want to take salary back (especially Stastny's horrendous contract). I think they want solid prospects in return. However I bet they woudl ask for O'Reilly which woudl be a deal breaker for me. Love that kid. Pure Heart

How about this.

Barrie/Elliot/Siemens, McGinn/Jones, Aittokallio/Patterson/Millan and a pick of some sort. Choose one of the guys in each group.

It'd be more like McGinn, Wilson, Pickard, Elliot+Siemens, and a 1st. That or someone notable to hang their hat on like Duchene or Stastny and 2-3 prospects/picks, which they either don't want or we aren't giving.

Murray's going to try to bleed dry whoever he deals Ryan to because it's his life at stake at this point. He wants a big name (preferably young) player going back to justify getting rid of Ryan to the fan base and the owners. Whoever gets him is going to pay far out the ass for him, assuming Murray has half a brain left in his head...

if he blossoms into the Chris Pronger-type defenseman that he was pegged to be when drafted first overall in 2006.
- martok2309

This will never happen. God bless Doug Armstrong for seeing it and dealing him.

He's does not possess the type of personality and mean streak that Pronger possessed. For his size, he's nowhere near the physical presence he should be.

I wish him well but I'm glad he's no longer a Blue.

Well then, you enjoy your lethargic "Power Forward" and your defenseman lacking in defensive awareness, sir. I'll have Mr. Siemens give you a ring in a few years so we can catch up...

Lmao, ya if only it were that easy. I don't mean to offend you but that's far from what it would take. That's like an offer you make on april fools.

If he keeps his feet moving and his abrasive play up, he could come close but Pronger is a hard level to get to. I'll be fine if he just becomes a number one capable of eating minutes and playing physical.

Time will tell as these next two years be key.
